How to Set Up a Japan eSIM Before Your Flight (Step by Step)
Setting up an eSIM takes about ten minutes. Doing it at home, before you fly, is the easiest way to avoid hunting for airport WiFi after a long flight.
Before you buy
- Check that your phone supports eSIM. Most recent iPhones and many Android phones do, but not every model or regional version.
- Check that your phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked phone cannot use another company's eSIM. If you are unsure, ask your carrier.
- Pick a plan that covers your whole trip. Count your days in Japan, including arrival and departure days. Our calculator does the math for you.
Install it at home
- Buy the plan and open the QR code or the provider's app.
- Connect to stable WiFi.
- Follow the provider's instructions to add the eSIM to your phone. On most phones this is under the mobile/cellular settings.
- Give the new line a clear name, such as "Japan".
- Leave the Japan line switched off for now unless your provider tells you otherwise.
Many providers only start the validity period when the eSIM first connects in Japan, but rules differ. Check your provider's activation policy so you don't lose days.
When you land in Japan
- Turn on the Japan line and set it as the line for mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for the Japan line. Most travel eSIMs need this, even though you are using them in Japan.
- Keep your home line on for calls and texts only if you want to receive SMS codes, and make sure data roaming is off for your home line to avoid charges.
- Open a map app to check you are online.
If it doesn't connect
- Restart your phone.
- Check that the Japan line is selected for mobile data and that roaming is on for it.
- Contact the provider's support. Most offer chat support in English.
Keep the provider's support page or app handy on your phone before you fly, in case you need help on arrival.
